My GPU fan is making an annoying noise.

I have an Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-52-75DE. The GPU fan, on the right side, is making a low pitched rattling noise. It’s very hard to describe, but it’s like a purring or growling. The fan propellor is metal not plastic for some reason, but I think that could be it. I tried using some foam tape for shock absorption, and that did help a bit. My only idea is to buy a replacement fan and swap the propellers. I can include some pictures if that would be helpful.

Hi

I have I think the same problem, my IT guy thinks its coming from the speakers however just having it turned on you can hear the buzzing noise, but connect it up to the VR and it gets loud to the point you have to turn if off.

Im having the same issue, GPU fan, right hand side of laptop. Slight rattling noise like its slightly off balance.

I'm having the same problem right now as well, it started yesterday and it rattles the laptop and makes an annoying noise, I've been trying to look for a teardown guide but I can't seem to find it at all

Heat has probably warped the fan which is plastic most of the time. You need a new one.

No, my model specifically has a metal fan. It's only a few months old, and I don't do any hardcore gaming on it. If looked at the fan and its in good condition.

I’m having the same problem with a predator ph315-52. I describe the sound as C3 or 130hz pitch buzzing sound. This is the C just below middle C on a piano. It will change from C to C# and move around that area. I called Acer and they said to send it in.

Hello!

I have a slightly older Acer Predator. Not sure about the sound you’re describing but personally, I had a loud annoying noise and it was from the removable 3rd fan. Try removing it and seeing if the noise goes away. Also, sometimes I hear a very low noise (from one of the remaining 2 fans) when the laptop is cold but once it warms up, it’s gone. Feels a little as if the fan is hitting something lightly as it turns. Hope this helps.

This is not quite an answer, but I wanted to share my current experience and maybe it'll help others like you.

I have the PH517-61-R0GX version and same thing... GPU fan noise went crazy and sounded like a blade fell off inside. I opened it up and there's ZERO damage. I used the included fan control software interface on the laptop and slowed down the fan... it registers it at 300 RPM and the noise is very minor, but as soon as it ramps beyond that, the noise is terrible. (this thing is always hot so it's required.) I ran it open and the noise was still present to confirm nothing was pushing on the fan housing. I performed a deep clean too, it only slightly helped. The next thing I can think of is to either:

  1. Replace the fan entirely which they don't make anymore. or
  2. Open the fan housing and inspect for problems... maybe the propeller is unbalanced like a few people suspected. idk if I can fix that... or maybe lint it stuck in it? or
  3. I replace the propeller and hope that works. But I don't know what to buy, the current propeller is metal and I'm not finding anything that looks related...
  4. Warranty it, but my warranty is expired so I'm on my own.

Anyone have any advice?

PS: to open the housing, you have to cut or melt the plastic rivets to get inside. Bad design ACER!
