USB port/panel shorting from improper connection

Hello, I recently plugged a USB device into my laptop and I think that it shorted the USB panel on the motherboard. I think that the USB cable had been fine in the computer, but wired wrong into the device. When I plugged in the device, heard some sort of pop in the computer, and now whenever I plug anything into the port nothing happens and I am not able to find the device in the Device Manager. Is there any way to fix this that does not include a DIY or taking it to a professional? If I do have to take it to a professional are there any recommended ones?

A popping sound implies you burnt something inside. At this point you’ll need to open the system up to locate the damaged component. If that’s beyond your skills then its time to find someone who does.

There is no software solution for this.

You may want to check the device you tried plugging in maybe using the wrong power brick. I’ve seen this a few times which a 18 volt brik is used on a device that was designed to only work with 5/6 volts.

One other item. It’s possible you have more than one USB connector and that only this particular “bank” of USB connectors are damaged/destroyed. If you have others that work, you can consider putting a USB Hub to expand your ports if needed as a stop gap measure to repairing your board.

Dan, however, is very right that a pop clearly states a blow fuse/cap/IC component. If you aren’t good with a soldering iron or heat gun, this is outside your scope of DIY repair.
