Upgrade 2010 logic board (i7 820-2850) to 2012 (i7 820-3330)

Can this be done? I’ve read a few forums where the LVDS connection needs to be “finessed” in, but haven’t ran across definitive “no” or a “how-to make it work” thread on here. Any assistance?

Only the 2011 models can be upgraded with the 2012. Apple only made one physical alteration between them which was the LVDS cable and the logic board connector (you can see the shell color is different between them - Silver & Gold).

The 2010 models use a different display which the 2012 board can’t ID so the screen will not start up until the dedicated GPU drivers load (OS). The intergraded graphics engine in the CPU depends on the firmware driver and won’t work on its own. So none of the Mac startup key combinations will be visible if you invoke them.

I don’t think its worth it! I would just recommend looking for a used one given the costs.

Darn, I was hoping to get away from the 330 GPU, and the C9650 capacitor among other things. Any recs on these or would it be better to replace these w/a donor board before putting $200~ on a refurbished logic board?

I would look at the 2012 systems for sale. You should be able to get the 2.3 GHz model for $350 USD and the 2.6/2.7 GHz for $400.

I think that's a better investment

but your saying it would work if I didn't care about not being able to see startup I have a broken 2012 everything dead besides logic board and battery and a good 2010 ????

No, it won't work!

A left hand screws won't work replacing a right hand screw, yet both are screws!
