Unknown Process Preventing MacBook Pro from sleeping

This is the machine:

  • MacBook Pro 15” Late 2013
  • 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
  • Running macOS Catalina 10.15.4

This is the problem:

  • The computer is no longer able to sleep
  • The display will dim, then awaken after a minute - as if the trackpad is touched
  • The issue persists with/without AC Power
  • Software is up to date/apps are up to date
  • Went to Settings>Energy Saver>Restore Defaults - issue persists
  • Opened Activity Monitor to identify processes that were preventing sleep
  • Two found: hidd & powerd
  • powerd was started by root
  • hidd was started by _hidd
  • I saved a sample of hidd if that would be helpful to anyone who thinks they can figure this out.

Catalina is still very buggy! Apple messed up big time and even its updates don’t cleanly install. I’m sure that’s your issue here.

Create a bootable external drive with Catalina and update it to the latest. Using it your system should be stable. Then with it as your active boot drive, check that it is not experiencing the same issue. If its good you’ll need to install a fresh copy of the OS. Depending on what you have for apps and data you’ll want to make a backup of your stuff wipe the drive and install from your external drives installer (not the internet installer copy).

Unfortunately, this was happening before I updated the system to Catalina...:(

I would still setup the external drive with Mojave if you want to go back.

I really don’t think this is a result of updating the operating system. It’s done this same thing for the past three major macOS releases.

@princeunicorn - Yes! Thats true your problem is within your internal drive. To isolate out what it is we need to have a clean drive running your current macOS. Which is were we where going with the external drive so we don't loose your apps and work on your internal.

So with the external drive as your boot drive with a clean OS and nothing else is the system stable? If it is then slowly install one app at a time. Going from your most used to the least. (leave your data on the internal) So when did it mess up if it did? Go slowly give it a good couple of days between each app install.
