Display backlight only working in safe mode

Hi, I’ve got a mid 2014 13” MBPr, I’m having a backlight issue but if I safe boot it works perfectly, I’ve tried talking to apple but they won’t tell me what the issue is (I presume they don’t know) Wondering what everyone thinks it could be as like I said it’s fine in safe mode. Sometimes it works for about a day normally but then stops, I’ve opened it up and can’t see any signs of liquid damage. I wouldn’t have thought it would be the fuse as it works occasionally.

Ive reinstalled OS X multiple times thinking it was a software issue, but to no avail. if I plug it into an external display it works fine. If I shine a light through the Apple logo on the back I can see that the screen is working, it’s just the backlight. When it’s working the light will occasionally turn off but if I close the lid and open it again that usually sorts it out.

Any help would be appreciated cause at the moment I’m completely out of ideas.

I know that Safe Mode disables accelerated graphics, which is the only connection I can think of regarding your symptoms. That being said, I have never had the experience where Safe Mode allowed backlight, while normal boot did not. All backlight issues that I’ve experienced were the result of hardware failure, not software, so my hunch is that there may be a hardware problem on the logic board level. I would recommend running the Apple diagnostic test (hold ‘D’ during power on). You may also want to inspect the condition of the display cable pins and the corresponding port on the logic board for any damage.

You had the same thoughts as me, I've done diagnostics and it all was fine. checked both sides of the logic board and couldn't see any sign of corrosion, checked display pins and cleaned them up even though they looked fine. I'm stumped

And now I've been running it about 5 hours and it's working perfectly after not using it for a month (I have another MBP) but I don't trust it to work next time I boot it

@nibblearse Interesting! If the issue happens again consistently in the future, I would recommend acquiring a known-good display (maybe you have a kind friend with the same model?) and testing with that display connected. If the issue occurs with a known-good display connected you can be pretty confident the issue is on the logic board level (most likely beyond my repair ability) - if it doesn't occur with a known-good display, display replacement or display cable replacement would be the way to go.

@zpl That's not a bad idea tbf. One thing I haven't checked is the display cable, I checked the connecte, but I guess it could be higher up like in the hinge. I've got a few days off before I go back to work so I'll crack her open and see if I can see any issues there too

First try running a good “Paid For” anti-virus program like Symantec Endpoint protection.

But surely after multiple fresh installs and the problem still persisting it can't be software? granted if it's not software it's very odd that a safe boot will make it work but why do you think antivirus would help?

@nibblearse Why, because the problem is gone in Safe Mode so it's something in the user account.

I've tried making a different admin user account and the problems persist though, I will give it a go though thanks
