The main internal speakers are working but there is no sound coming from the rear head phone jack. We've used the jack a lot for both headphones and external speakers. Now, neither are working. Do you think this is a sound card issue or just the jack itself? Thanks for your help!

If the internal speakers are working I would think the sound card would be ok. With heavy use sometimes the contacts in a jack will deform and no longer make good contact Since your computer is an early 09 I would check with Apple about a warranty repair. Ralph

Ralph, thanks for your response. I think we actually got this machine in Dec. 2008 so it's out of warranty. Not sure I want to attempt a repair myself. Likely take this to a local repair shop. Or maybe the Apple Store.
I think I would still get a appointment with the genius bar--who knows they might decide to cover the repair. Ralph
An easy workaround would be a USB dongle - has mic and line in/out. USB audio is separate from analog audio and will often work when the onboard wont.
I have the same problem. The speakers and jack work fine when plugged into another iMac, so I know it's not them. Will a red/white RCA cable connected by a USB produce sound to the external speakers?

Did you take a close look at the tip of the jack plug? They break a lot.
