Broken iPhone 5s, Unsure of Issue

So i recently was given a broken Iphone that has a broken screen but the whole phone itself doe not work. I really want to fix it and use it but I am unsure what the problem is. I do not want to buy the wrong parts for the phone and have them end up being the wrong ones. So my question is how do i know what part of the phone is actually the broken part.
