Why is my Playstation 2 image broken up?

Upon turning on my PS2, the image had several lines through it. Some text was blurry and some was replaced by blocks with lines through them. I tried several different games, making sure the discs were clean, with the same results. Next, I tried turning on the console with no disc inserted but the image was still bad. I then tried a different component cable but the same thing happened. Unless my component cables are both defective, I believe that the problem is with the console itself but I have no experience in fixing consoles.
