Not working screen after screen replacement

Hi,

This weekend i replaced the broken screen of the 5S. After replacing it and powering it on i got the battery icon that the phone’s battery was dead so i put it onto a charger. After some time i heard the sound that it was booting but after that i didn’t see anything (screen was black but saw light). After reconnecting the cables i’ve got nothing at all and i’m stuck now… . Can someone give some info?

hello Glen,

did you disconnect the battery while working? Most of the faults are related to the forgetfulness of this important matter. It doesn't necessarily look bad, let's check it out together.

There can basically only three reasons for the missing image on the screen:

  • no backlight, caused by connecting the screen with the battery inserted. Filters are damaged, electronics intervention is needed (it's a very simple and basic repair)
  • no image, caused like above, but damaged are logical lines or screen power circuit.
  • you have a faulty replacement part, which happens most often

To be a sure, to make a proper diagnosis, power up a phone and on dark screen try shine a flashlight or very light spot. You will see a very dark image on screen. Touch should be work.

If you have got a old, broken glass screen (if it work), try connect it back and check a screen.

And finally, go to repair shop, there you can find a help with it.

Hi Tojaert,

I followed all the steps from the guide of Ifixit so i disconnected the battery . I bought the replacement screen from ifixit last week and at first i got the battery logo, after that nothing.

What else can i do?

I guess the apple logo comes and goes quite cyclically. Am I right? If so, it means the phone is on a loop. One or more devices cause a conflict on a logical or electrical level. There is nothing more, just unplug all devices (cameras, ID button, battery etc.).  A few tools would be nice, I guess you don't have any. DCPS, cable with power i5s plug, trusted screen, housing and battery. Every repair shop shop has this. Let's try to use at least part of it. Let's assume your screen and battery are OK (which is not so obvious). Connect the power tape, the screen (only one contact) and the battery - as the last one. Turn on the phone (the rest of the cables remain disconnected). Look at the screen, if it boots up normally, plug in another device (next plug) - remember: switch it off, !!! unplug battery !!!, then plug next connector and as last - plug a battery and start a device . If nothing has changed, we can conclude - one of the connected devices or the motherboard is causing the problem.

Unplug battery, unplug power flex (this flex connected to the power button on the top of a housibng) - plug DOCK connector, then at last - plug battery connector again. Use a lighting cable to start a device. Look at the screen. If nothing change, it means your battery or screen is faulty or… motherboard has a short circuit somewhere. If you don't see improvement, there's nothing else you can do. You can only go to a good repair shop and paid for service.

Hi,

I troubleshooted further and connected the old screen again and got something on the broken screen so the new screen is the issue. How do i contact ifixit with this?

hi Glenn, I don't know. Try general contact or shop advice, email them. It must be possible.
