Why do I need to disconnect the battery after charging to power on

I just replaced the battery with an Ifixit kit. Followed the initial charging directions. After the laptop dies I can charge the battery (magsafe goes from orange to green.) After charging the machine will not power on. If I open the case and disconnect/reconnect the battery the machine powers on.

This sounds like it could be an SMC issue. You can try resetting the SMC by following the steps here: How to reset the SMC of your Mac
