Why are my controls not working?

For some weeks now my headphone controls/buttons have not been working correctly, they can sometimes work just fine and sometimes not work at all, at times songs replay over and over again and the volume decreases or increases without me pressing them.

The buttons feel like they should be working and reacting, but, more often than not I have to stretch the headphones or some other weird maneuver to get the buttons to react. Has anyone else had this issue and found a workaround? Could it be possible that I could open it up and see if something is not connected?
