Kenmore is a popular appliance brand commonly sold by Sears, but Sears does not manufacture any of the appliances themselves. Instead, they source that out and have other manufacturers make their appliances for them. Kenmore refrigerators are made by a variety of different manufacturers including LG, Electrolux, GE, and Whirlpool.

Kenmore Elite 79579752904 ice maker leaking

I live in a rental. The ice maker has been replaced in the last 5 years. There seems to be a leak on the right hand side where the tube to fill the ice maker is. It leaks down the side causing ice buildup, the bin gets froze to the inside and the ice in the dispenser gets all froze together and wont dispense.

We let it thaw, removed the ice maker and cleaned it, reinstalled but no luck.

Any ideas? My landlord just replaced the whole ice maker unit so I don't know what could be wrong.

Thank you for your answer. I turned the ice maker off for 4 days, no leakage.

I turned it back on and was FINALLY able to observe it dump ice and then refill. We it refilled the water splashed everywhere! It ran down the inside of the ice bin, down the side of the ice bin and pooled at the bottom. I inspected the tube that fills the ice maker and it doesn't seem to be cracked. Why would it splash so much?

Check the tube for cracks. Does it leak all the time? If so, might be a faulty water valve. Possibly calcification build-up not letting it close all the way. Remove the ice maker, and observe. If it leaks without any call to make ice, then suspect the water valve. Does it build up slowly? Takes a while to build up enough ice to freeze everything solid? If so the tube might be cracked. But if it happens fairly quickly then the water valve is most likely not seating fully, and will need replaced. You can try and take it out, clean it well with vinegar to dissolve calcification, and see how it does then. But thats not a guarantee. It could be weak solenoid, weak spring, or damage to the actual mechanism preventing it from seating fully.

I know this is an old question but I had the exact same issue with the same fridge. The problem isn't with the ice maker but with calcium build up in the fill tube. I removed the ice maker to get access to the fill tube extending from the freezer door. I used a wire brush straw cleaner and vinegar. Dip the straw cleaner in vinegar and shove it in and out of the fill tube to remove the buildup and repeat multiple times. Use a blow dryer to remove any ice buildup around the fill tube and ice chute. Let the ice maker completely defrost before re-installing it. I suspect that the buildup in the fill tube is causing the water to come out at a higher pressure which is causing it to splash out of the ice maker.

This description seems to match my symptoms. Water from the fill tube is splashing out of the ice tray. It makes a mess of the freezer and the ice bucket. I've previously changed the dip switch to shorten the length of time the fill solenoid is turned on. I also put a pressure regulator on the water line. Neither of those solutions stopped the splashing. I haven't used the ice maker for several years now. I don't fully understand the fill tube calcium removal solution. Could you please provide additional details? Where is the buildup? How is the fill tube routed? TIA
