Did you make any major changes like wipe the hard drive? A lot of the time, a sudden boot device error means the hard drive has failed, especially on an older system like this. Listen to the area where the hard drive lives - see if you hear it go click, click, click continuously or if it is grinding (should be on the right side of the palmrest near the trackpad) - if so, bad drive; no diagnostic SW needed. If not, run the HP diagnostics and check the hard drive specifically - for this model, you need to pick the Additional Recovery Support option and select 2017 and prior due to when this model came out. You may also want the Vision diagnostics in case you need the AMD Vision ones for some testing, but the standard HP should work.

If the original drive has failed, install a 256-512GB SSD to replace the original drive. If the OS has corrupted you can try your luck at a reinstall, but if you run into any additional issues with the drive it’s time to replace it.

Here's how to get into it:

Make sure the replacement drive is backward compatible to Serial ATA II 3.0 GHz

@mayer I figured this is from 2012 so no SATA II spec check needed... The A60M is a 6x6GB/s chipset. Look in the FCH section. Anything is fair game here :-).

That said, the better drives like the Samsungs have legacy support, so a legacy compatible drive may mean better overall lifetime. The cheap drives tend to be the ones which lack it and have more issues.

This happens to my HP laptop a lot, cause it is really cheap (not a fan of HP quality). All I do is hold power button to force shut off, then try powering it back on. It works for me, but Idk if your problem is that simple.

I have had this happen on 4 new HP laptops but yours is much older so most likely this wont work but its worth a shot.

Your drive is dying, or the HD cable disconnected. They love using a cable on the Consumer series, yet the Commercial platforms use M.2 (newer systems like my 840 G3) or on the board/a daughterboard with a soldered connector.

IMO the consumer models have more HD reliability issues then Commercial :-(.
