How to add one or two SSDs without interfering with fan issues

Hi guys,

I was curious if anyone had any information about installing one or two EXTRA SSD hard drives in the 27 inch iMac.

I have the 2011 model and I know that there are a lot of issues with fan speeds. I currently have an iMac that has the typical SuperDrive plus a 1 TB hard drive.

I understand there are three SATA ports in the new iMac. How many ports are "open?" Does this mean that there are two free ports to add two more hard drives? Or, does this mean that one hard drive uses one and the SuperDrive uses one, leaving only one more for upgrading?

Basically what I want to do is to add one SSD hard drive to my current Mac set up without removing any other drives the system. If there is an extra port after this, I will add another SSD drive.

My goal is to get my Windows and Mac operating systems on SSD's, and use the remaining regular hard drive for data.

I want to do all this without creating fan problems with the iMac.

Does anybody know if there is a good video that discusses this online?

don't know anything about the fan problem. but regarding the open hdd bays, i know there is a product that converts the cd drive area to a slot for another hdd on the macbook pro, and comes with and external enclosure for your cd drive. might be one for the iMac... or possibly the same one would work...

From reading other sites, i bought this same hard drive cable noted in the 2 sites and used a 2010 SSD mount and dremmeled it down a bit to fit the graphics card heat pipes that run nearby.

Components from these two sites should do the trick to get you all setup with one or two SSD's in your iMac without any Fan Issues, assuming you leave the stock HDD in-place...

So I was at the local Apple Store and asked a "Genius" about putting in an SSD in addition to the HDD in my 2010 iMac. She bluntly told me that was unauthorized if it didn't come from Apple when shipped. I told I knew Apple didn't do the retro-fit/upgrade but where would I add the second drive if I did it myself. Again, she sternly and rudely said it can't be done and claimed the iMacs without a factory-installed SSD are built to a different configuration and don't have space for a second drive. I told her this made zero sense because Apple is not going to close up the space as a design alternative. When she sarcastically said "You must know more about the iMac than me," I walked out.

So, where does one insert a second drive (SSD) in an iMac that didn't come installed at the factory? I know if requires a special bracket, but surely there is ample space inside.

In the two links I posted for this thread, the second link positions the SSD in an area near where Anthony pointed out.

However, the official location of the SSD drive is located behind the SuperDrive (DVD Drive).

In current model 21.5" iMac's, the mounts are present and can been seen when removing the SuperDrive and depicted in the a link found at the page in my first link in this thread. iFixit also has a guide for installing a SSD in the 21.5" iMac that depicts the mounting points behind the SuperDrive. You should take a look at that for reference.

If you have a 2010 model or mid 2011 27" iMac, you will want to check to see if you have the mounts for the SSD behind the SuperDrive, however, it is noted that unless your 2010 iMac shipped with an SSD, it is very unlikely that you will have the mounting points.

If you don't then Anthony and the MaxUpgrades link (link #2) is the best bet for you.

MaxUpgrades fabricates a true alternative mounting component in a CNC machine.

They do not have a picture of it on their website as of the last time I checked and I had to email them for a close up shot. Will post here if I can find it in my email.

get the 3m double sided mounting strips from Office Depot...use this to get the ssd stuck under the optical drive. it is a solid fit. i used a lot of small pieces of the double sided mounting strips making sure to not cover any holes or screws. it's the perfect distance and perfect fit for ensuring the ssd does not move and for the SATA cable to reach and be routed easily.
