LG In-door Icemaker - Ice does not release when tray rotates

LG Refrigerator LFXS28566S

The Slim SpacePlus in-door icemaker fills and cycles normally but the icemaker tray does not release the ice cubes. The tray rotates, there is a knocking sound that continues for around 30 seconds but no ice is released. I can get the ice to drop if I open the icemaker door and pound on the ice tray when it rotates down, but that's obviously not a practical solution!

Our water is very hard (well water) but we have a sodium ion exchange water softener and particulate filter. The in-refrigerator filter is regularly replaced.

Can mineral deposits in the tray be preventing ice release? If so, what can be done to mitigate the problem?

Are there other possible causes that may prevent ice release?

Thanks for your detailed reply. I removed the icemaker assembly and thoroughly cleaned the tray with a vinegar/water solution and checked electrical continuity. I also lowered the freezer temperature, thinking that higher summer kitchen temperature was raising the icemaker temp, preventing it from working properly.

The icemaker has now been operating normally for about a week. I'm cautiously optimistic that periodically cleaning the tray and monitoring the icemaker temperature will resolve the issue.

Thank you, again, for your assistance.

Mineral deposits, when incoming water isn’t demineralized with a water softener can build up in pipes and deposit calcium in any machine using water. With a water softener, mineral deposits are minimized but certain water using machines may need more attention. On demand water heaters using heat exchangers can clog from mineral deposits unless yearly flushing with plain distilled vinegar or commercial solution is used to remove mineral build up. Your ice maker may be prone and maybe not. If you can read wiring diagrams, pull the refrigerator out and look for a wiring diagram. It may show the ice maker using a heating element as ice cubes are cycled out and emptied into the ice tray. Most electric appliances display less complicated wiring diagrams along with labeling and symbols. The heating element would be drawn as a jagged seesaw or coil and labeled as a heater. Many refrigerators use defrost heaters in the ice box where evaporators coils condense humidity into frost forming on the fins, impeding cold airflow. The defrost heater cycles once or twice a day to keep the evaporator coils ice free. The symbols for heaters should be the same whether for defrosters or heating the mold to release ice cubes.

If your ice maker does have a heater, there should be a wire or two connecting it to the ac cord. A thermal sensor is also used to prevent the heater from operating if the freezer goes above freezing temps (32F). A multimeter is needed to measure the heating element for continuity. If damaged, the molded in place heater/ice cube tray isn’t a single part for replacement. The entire ice make would most likely have to be replaced. A microswitch may be used to enable heater operation when the tray motor operates. Troubleshooting isn’t for the average diyer unfamiliar with wiring and refrigerator operation.
