Apple Blade SSD install

Hello Everyone,

I’m planning to install Apple Blade SSD in my iMac late 2012 i7 27” with 3TB fusion drive. If I add AB SSD to my system, will it work with 3TB fusion drive.

Thanks guys

Ah! I’ve got two feet and I want to put on another shoe problem!

Sadly the Fusion drive uses both drive ports! The SATA port holds the HDD (spinning rust drive) and the hidden custom PCIe slot on the backside of the logic board is holding a small blade SSD for the cache drive for your HDD. The two together make up the Fusion Drive set.

So… You are removing the caching SSD and putting in a bigger blade SSD making it the boot drive and forgoing the Fusion Drive config. Which is what I would do if you want the full performance the PCIe interface can offer!

Thanks heaps Dan. Honestly, I was trying to boot OS from SSD as 3TB the fusion drive is not compatible with boot camp and it’s kind of a bit slower than cheap SSDs. I was thinking of just replacing the fusion cache SSD with apple proprietary SSD that I purchased from marketplace. It is 7-17 SSD from late 2012 MacBook Pro. But it’s the small form factor (Gen2B) than the blade SSD (Gen2A). Same connection type different speed, maybe. I really would like to know if Gen2B SSD is compatible with late 2012 iMac. I could see they have same pin connector as I looked up as much as I can but couldn’t be able to check if it possible. I haven’t opened up the iMac. I fixit bundle for it may be on the way.

Thanks again Dan
