Old Boot disk in new body (2007 disk in 2009 MacPro Tower)

I have an old system/boot disk with applications from a 2007 MacPro

32bit Lion

Will the 2007 boot disk work in any other MacPro 2007 box?

Will it work in a 2009 MacPro box?

Are all the 1st generation MacPros compatible?

 Thank you

Your original MacPro 2006 system (MacPro1,1) can support upto Mac OS-X Lion (10.7.5)

The MacPro 2007 system (MacPro2,1) can also support upto Mac OS-X Lion (10.7.5). The original OS it had was Mac OS-X Tiger (10.4.9)

The MacPro 2009 system (MacPro4,1) can support upto macOS Sierra (10.11.6). The original OS it had was Mac OS-X Leopard (10.5.6)

So a full install of OS-X Lion will work across all three systems. If that is your aim. You will need to go into Options in the Installer to install all of the drivers Vs the minimum the given system you are setting up will support onto a external drive as the Grey CD/DVD disks you got for your system won’t have all of the drivers the other systems require as a bootable drive or installer (to be clear Apple jumped around so the issue of the disk you have maybe a newer on which did have a full install - Don’t shoot the messenger here). The retail copy of the OS will be a full version.

So lets back wind this … You will need a FireWire drive to create a bootable OS drive with OS-X Lion, then you can copy over to it the OS installer so you can then run it to install OS-X Lion or any supported by the given system OS.

As an example I have such a drive with all of the OS-X versions the MacPro can support and then I can boot up under this external drive to service the given system as needed. It is also partitioned with newer OS’s so I can likewise install them as well when the system I’m working on can support it.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.

So can I take my MacPro 2006 system (MacPro1,1) Mac OS-X Lion (10.7.5) system disk and just swap it into a MacPro3 or 4 box?

@m888 - No, its not that simple! Your current HDD for your MacPro1,1 won't have the needed drivers for the newer system to run off of your HDD.

You'll need to either re-install Lion and from within the OS installer enter into the Installers options to select the full OS install so all of the drivers are installed.

Here's the Lion download in case you don't have the retail version Mac OS X Lion Installer

@danj

Thank you ever soo much Dan

I’ll stay safe and just find another old machine that matches my MacPro1 exactly

Best wishes

@m888 - Just dig out an external FireWire drive and set it up as a bootable drive and using another FirWire cable connected between the two systems you can then migrate your stuff over to the replacement systems drives.

Jumping to a more powerful system is not so bad or risky ;-}
