XR not turning on, power button and the adjacent module get hot

After a screen replacement my phone got dropped and won’t turn on and the area directly around the power button gets hot.

Block Image

The red is the overheating component. When I have the green connector detached it doesn’t overheat or respond. My computer does not register the phone’s existence unless the battery cable is connected.

Disconnect all the flex cables except for the two bottom screen flex’s and the charge port and battery. Try booting the phone by inserting lightning cable.

@imicrosoldering which of the cables is the charge port? i'm a little new to working on things this small. Also, is there any way to connect with windows? I don't have a mac and itunes does not want to interact with my phone, though my computer is registering it as connected now

figured out which cable is the charge port, with just the cables you mentioned the same module I have indicated above gets hot and my computer dings but it does not boot

You can try a program called 3uTools but iTunes needs to be installed on the PC. If your computer is registering that the phone is connected it is likely iTunes is not recognising it because of the USB restrictions. You will need to input your passcode before it will register with iTunes or 3uTools.

If your PC is telling you it is connected you will need to rule out a faulty screen and battery. If it is not the screen or battery you need to rule out other parts that could be causing the problem which is why I suggested disconnecting all the flexes except for the ones I told you to leave connected. The charge port connector is the long one beside the battery connector.

Once you have ruled out parts you will need to take readings of certain circuits with a multimeter as it will be a board problem but there is a good chance it is just a faulty screen.

how would I go about ruling out the screen or battery? The screen was a recent replacement with parts from this site and worked until I dropped it, and I have never had issues with the battery and there are no signs of damage. My computer detects it with the screen completely disconnected and the same area I previously mentioned heats rapidly. 3uTools registered it being in dfu mode, and it will not register as being connected with the battery disconnected

@tman0001 It will not be recognised with the battery disconnected. Who told you it will? If the phone is in DFU mode it naturally has a black screen.

DFU mode means the CPU is not communicating to the NAND. You can try and update with iTunes or 3uTools but it will probably fail. From experience if a XR goes into DFU mode after a drop it will be a faulty NAND or CPU causing it most likely a cracked NAND or cracked solder pads under the CPU. If you need the data I would suggest sending it to a reputable data recovery shop.

If you don’t need the data you could try a restore but I don’t like your chances.

I wasn't told anything by anyone, was just trying things from desperation. I currently don't have any means to get it repaired or recovered, so I'll just replace it for now. Thanks for the help though
