My computer won't turn on.

So when I try to turn my laptop on, something peculiar happens. The usb devices that I have connected to it (microphone, external hdd, etc) turn on, and the keyboard back-lit is on. However, there seems to be no display output, because it doesn't connect to either of my 2 external monitors (Ive checked the monitors and hdmi cables) and the laptop monitor is broken(previous problem) so that doesn't display either. When I try to hold down the power button to manually restart it, everythings turns off for about 5 seconds, then turns back on. I don't know what's happening.

Force shut down your ASUS laptop by pressing and holding the Power button for at least 15 seconds; you can release the button when you find the power light is off. After that, please perform a CMOS reset (hard reset) by pressing and holding the Power button for 40 seconds. Please hold the button firmly!

Regards,

Will

Hi,

It seems as though it is not passing POST (power on self test) or if it is, its not booting into the OS.

Try a full power refresh in case the BIOS has become corrupted for some reason, preventing a normal start, by removing all the power from the laptop i.e. charger, main battery and RTC battery.

So here’s the procedure:

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the charger if connected.
  • Open the laptop and disconnect the main battery and the RTC battery.

Here’s the guide that may help. The RTC battery is seen in Step.10 connected to the motherboard by a red/black cable You don’t have to remove either battery, just disconnect them.

Also if you have a DMM (digital multimeter) use its’ Voltmeter function to test the RTC battery’s voltage when it’s disconnected from the motherboard. If it is <2.6V DC replace it. If it is <2.6V DC the BIOS can become corrupted preventing a normal start as the RTC battery maintains the BIOS settings when the laptop is switched off. Search online for Acer Nitro 5 AN515-53-55G9 RTC (or CMOS) battery to find suppliers that suit you best.

  • Press and hold the laptop’s Power button for 30 seconds and then release it.
  • Reconnect the RTC battery
  • Reconnect the main battery and reassemble the laptop
  • Connect the charger and then try to turn on the laptop.

If it starts there may be a message regarding the date and time being incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset. Once it has been corrected, the message won’t appear the next time that the laptop is started.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

1. Perform a hard reset: Disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery (if it's removable), and hold down the power button for about 15 seconds. Then, reconnect the power adapter (without the battery) and try turning on the laptop again.

2. Check the power adapter and connections: Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and a working power source. Try using a different power outlet or a different power adapter, if available, to rule out any issues with the power supply.

3. Test with an external monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor using a VGA or HDMI cable and see if you get any display output. Make sure the external monitor is powered on and set to the correct input source. If you still don't get any display, try using a different cable or monitor to eliminate potential issues with the connections or peripherals.

4. Reset the BIOS/UEFI settings: Access the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing the appropriate key (such as Del, F2, or Esc) during startup. Once in the BIOS/UEFI, look for an option to reset the settings to their default values. Save the changes and restart the laptop to see if it resolves the issue.

5. Remove and reseat hardware components: If you're comfortable with it, you can try removing and reseating the RAM modules and storage drive(s) in your laptop. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause startup problems. Ensure the laptop is powered off and disconnected from any power source before attempting this.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to contact Acer customer support or take your laptop to a professional technician for further diagnosis and repair. They will be able to provide more specific guidance based on the exact model and configuration of your Acer Nitro 5 laptop.
