iMac used to beep in morse code, but now doesnt show signs of life

as the title says, the iMac on boot beeped SOS in morse code (or OSO, i forgot which), but after a while it stopped doing that, and now doesnt seem to react to any input.

Any ideas on what it might be/how to fix?

@kirinplays it has already been established that this a EFI issue, which may originate at a few places. I'd start off by resetting the SMC and PRAM. Then I'd go on checking the RAM. Remove one module at a time and isolate with one known-good memory module installed in one memory slot. Repeat by testing in other memory slots. Restart and see if that makes a difference. Check the diagnostics LED on your logic board and let us know what they display.

Replace the PRAM battery for sure. Take some pictures of your power board and this area "from the top left corner of the iMac (viewed from behind)there is a sort of electric buzz" to see if we can try to determine about this buzzing sound.

Just like a sinking ship, I think you waited a bit too long to save it!

The SOS or as some people think OSO is a firmware issue. But I think you have a deeper issue as your system isn’t even to startup now which sounds like your power supply has failed which is common in this series due to bad capacitors! Here’s more on it Capacitor Plague Here’s the guide to get it out iMac Intel 20" EMC 2266 Power Supply Replacement you’ll either need to replace it or find the needed capacitors to fix it.

That still leaves the firmware issue which could be a simple fix as the PRAM battery likely needs replacing iMac Intel 20" EMC 2266 PRAM Battery Replacement

I also wanted to add that when it beeped SOS/OSO, it would stop beeping after ~5 minutes and then boot normally. Could that influence what the problem is?

@kirinplays - Then battery for sure for that aspect not the bad caps which is now stopping you (two problems)

@Dan could it still be bad caps? something I found out is that, from the top left corner of the iMac (viewed from behind), there is a sort of electric buzz, and it got louder when I knocked on the 4 corners. could that mean a dislodged component? is there any fix that doesn't involve tearing apart the iMac?

ill make a new post

@kirinplays - let’s stick with this post. Otherwise you’ll get a very disconnected solution!
