No sign of life after battery replacement

Hello ,

I have an Surface Pro 4 , i bought the device with the battery allready swollen , so the display was a little bit peeleed off , but was working normal and perfect.

I succeded to unstick the display , tried after that to power the unit , worked perfect.

Replaced the battery with an second hand one , that from what i head from the pervious owner , the battery stayed for 1 year or more , so probably is empty.

After i reattach the battery , no sign of life from the unit. I tried with battery removed same no sign. After that i had read that need to isolate the battery pins from the mainboard , tried even like that , nothing.

I had checkd , the diodes , all are fine , the 0ohm resistor is ok , even i have 3.3V on the IC.

What else to check ? Could be the battery problem ? The ideea is , i don't want to spend other money on a new battery to see that will be the same , without life ;)

All the answer are appreciated. Thank you

I bought another board with battery , in hope to solve my problem. Same :( No life. And battery have almost 7v on it .... What can i try else ?

Oh geez. Only 2 answers I can come up with is 1, dirty charging contacts, and/or 2, bad battery board. If not those, try replacing both at the same time, maybe the board killed the battery then the battery killed the board.

2 board , 2 charging ports .... Battery is ok , beacuse i measure it and its ok. but probably both boards have the same problem ....

Do you have a heat gun? If so, remove the battery and heat up the area near the processor and protection circuit, making sure it doesn't get too hot. This will reflow the solder. Also, after that, if it still doesn't work, if you have a flir camera, check near the protection circuit and processor, and see if it gets hot, after it cools, of course.

Heat gun i have even heat station , what i don't have is a thermal camera. Could you indicate on a picture wher is that protection circuit ?

Well, either you have a bad battery board inside the battery, or the data lines are reversed or not contacting (or no data lines at all). Most devices that communicate with the battery need to have the data lines connected in order to work.

I tried even without battery , and not shows any sign of life

Either the protection circuit in the surface that tripped, (or keeps tripping) when you try to power it up, or something else tripped (idk what or where anything is on the picture, board is too complex for pictures)

Do you have any ideea where that protection can be ? I tried with the board outside the case to be sure nothing keeps touching something and no result

Protection circuit is usually near the battery connection(s). If not, it's near the USB in.

@anchefixes one question. If i try to beep this component to ground , beeps on both sides. So these means is shorted to ground ? But i have 3v on them. Is there any chance to be the IC the problem ?

What do you mean by beep? If you have a capacitance tester, test that little capacitor circles in red. Those can be a problem when they fail, because they go dead short.

Meaning testing with the multimeter for continous. and is beeping in both directions with the ground. And that isn't right from what i know . But i have 3V on them

My bad! That was a voltage regulator for the processor! The beeping could be because the internal step-down transformer. The chip is the yellow chip to the left.

But is normal to be shroted that capacitor and to have 3V on it ? It's o comon problem because 2 boards with the same problem ?

From what i see the yellow chip is Texas Instruments BQ24770 Battery Charge Controller w/ System Power Monitor

Step downs are the one with blue

Oh the capacitor? (sorry I had a dum moment) No, if the capacitor is normal, it should be low resistance at first then go higher quickly. Though the results may be wrong because, largely, capacitors in circuit can beep even if they are normal, because:

1. A resistor in parallel

2. A microchip's internal resistance

Really don't know what other else to check .... Can be the 0ohm resistor ? but on the multimeter to be false oke ?

Can you send me a clearer pic of that area?

Hello all

I also same problem in Surface pro 4.The cap near ITE chip is shorted, 0.00 ohmios to ground.

But I have not 3v3. I have not 14V in BQ2477 chargue controller. Some circuit is cutting 14V from external Power Supply for overprotection (the battery is out) I am going to try find the shorted element .

For that I will put 3V for other power supply while I see what circuit hot with termal camera
