Do SSDs die without warning?

Today my 2013 MBA froze, and when restarted, went to the dreaded blinking question mark. The drive does not show up in Disk Utility, diskutil, or Techtool Pro 13 when booted from Internet Recovery or a USB stick.

Is there anything that can be tried other than getting a new drive? I've already tried reseating the (Samsung) drive, with no improvement.

Is the the original SSD? If not what did you install.

I bought the computer used, so I can't be sure, but it's Samsung branded, and I assume it's original.

@Calion - SSDs do die from wear and often times with little warning. More so in the smaller sized drives and ones that are very full as the SSDs micro-controller with manages the housekeeping has no room to shuttle stuff around to wear-level the data so less used blocks are free to use.

Is there any way to test it other than plugging it in and seeing if it's recognized?

@Calion - Without access to another system which offers the same custom Apple SSD or a external case ($$) there is little you can do.

I’m starting to guess you want to access the files that you hadn’t backed up. Is that the case here?

Not really; I have a fairly recent backup, and everything important is online. There may be one or two things that I want.

It's more that I don't want to buy a new drive until I'm sure this one is dead.
