Why is my iMac so slow all of a sudden?

My iMac has 16GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, out of which about 500GB is still available.

Everything was working as normal until last night, when I was editing a video on Final Cut. All of a sudden, everything started being really slow. I restarted the iMac, but still had the same issue.

I turnt the iMac off completely, then turned it on to use it this morning and it's still veey slow. I tried to reset the VRAM but that didn't fix anything. Is there anything I can do, preferably without losing everything I have on it?

From my experience of the mac has gotten really slow all of a sudden that tends to mean that ether the SSD or RAM is on its way out

Just to be in the safe side I would back up your data and try the following

Create a partition on your Mac to install macOS onto to see if that resolves the issue

I would also try running the hardware diagnostic

If you don’t get any issues I would consider replacing the SSD first then the RAM if the issue persists

SSD’s degrade over use just like HDD’s do,they will all need replaced eventually

I only recently replaced the old HDD the iMac came with a brand new SSD. this was 2 months ago or so. Could it really deteriorate this quickly?

I will definately run the hardware test, thanks for the link. How would I change the RAM, if it will come to that?

EDIT: I just did the hardware test and it seems that somehow fixed the issue (for now, at least)
