Can I remove MDM after I already completed a fresh install?

A friend from work gave me a laptop from our old company that nobody was using and it was reformatted so it was a clean Mac. He gave it to me while we both worked there but have both left since. I've been using it for about 4 years and I decided to replace the logic board for a larger SSD.

Before replacing the old logic board, I erased the machine and attempted installing macOS on it to make sure my time machine backup worked correctly. But as I was reinstalling, the MDM for my company showed up. This brought up a some questions:

  1. Is MDM tied to the logic board or will replacing it still lock me out?
  2. Has MDM been enabled on my laptop the entire time I've used it and I just didn't know? I haven't heard from the company so do they just not care?
  3. Will MDM be linked to my Time machine backup? If I restore from my time machine backup on the new logic board, will my old company be able to track it? Is a fresh install a better idea?
  4. Is it possible to bypass MDM so I can reuse the old logic board?

I've tried booting off a flash drive to avoid connecting the the MDM servers in hopes of bypassing the need for an internet connection, but I get an error saying a critical update is needed in order for me to complete the install

I am also unable to restore my time machine backup for some reason. Any reason MDM would cause issues? I loaded the time machine backup but it keeps getting stuck at page with the Apple logo with the loading bar. All troubleshooting leads back to a fresh install which I can't get past because of MDM. Hopefully there is a workaround.

Would appreciate any insight/advice.

Thanks!

The critical update message you are getting should not be tied to the MDM. Usually when you get that message its tied to a firmware update that's needed to work with the OS you are attempting to install. In my experience the device enrollment is a separate issue. I refurbish these machines and there are so many intricacies it will make your head spin. I cant offer you advice on Time Machine but I have always found a way to get an OS on a machine.

MDM is tied to the logic board. So you don’t have any concerns with in the backup as long as you don’t replace the current OS files. You may encounter some licensing issues on Apps the company installed as the often are linked to the systems S/N or hidden files.

Thank you so much for the info! Really glad I can move forward with swapping out my logic board. I was worried I may have bricked my laptop.

Just to clarify, I can restore from a time machine backup and I shouldn't have any problems? Other than with Apps tied to the S/N?

@sidvdexx - Just don’t restore the OS files! (System Folder). There are a few extensions (hidden) you don’t want to carry over. And some third party tools do other strange things with Find My services.

Thank you guys for all your help! I am running into another issue now though and not sure what's causing it.

The new install went great and everything was working but now the laptop keeps randomly shutting down and takes a while before I can bring it back up. My initial thought was overheating but the laptop was off and I turned it on the next day. Less than two min in it randomly shut off again. Another time it stayed on for about 30 min before shutting down. I tried looking at the logs but not entirely sure what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions?

@sidvdexx - Restart your system and press the D key to enter into diagnostics. If you can install this gem of an App to check your battery CoconutBattery post a snapshot of the apps main window with the Battery tab opened and while it’s under charge so we can check it out.

So I ran the diagnostic and the result was "No issues found." I tried booting in safe mode after but it shut down again. I can't turn it on right now but usually after 10-15 minutes, I can restart it. I'll try to install the CoconutBattery App if I can but any other suggestions?
