What is the foil on the keyboard for?

Replaced the keyboard with an aftermarket one because some keys were not working anymore. The original keyboard was covered with a transparent adhesive foil, while the replacement came without foil. Can anyone shed light on what purpose the foil serves and whether I should look for a replacement?

Don't have a definitive answer for you, but waterproofing is the first thing that comes to mind; you spill a drink on the keyboard and without some kind of barrier it's going directly onto the motherboard, and that's bad.
