Need to do an SMC reset whenever I close the lid

Whenever I close the lid of my MacBook , it completely shuts down and I need to perform a an SMC reset to turn it back on.

This started happening after I got the battery, keyboard and touchpad replaced (unfortunately the repair shop ghosted me).

If I shut down my computer normally or put it to sleep normally, it will reboot just fine as long as I don’t shut the lid. Only when I shut the lid does it crap out, shut down, and need a SMC reset.

Wonder if anyone had any idea what was going on or how to fix it.

EDIT:

So after doing an OS reset I found something. When closing the lid it appears it is not completely shutting down. I found this out because I saw the keyboard flash after closing the lid.

I brought a flashlight close to the screen and saw that I was able to see the screen. However it is extremely dim but still responds to the trackpad and keyboard. The only way to get the screen functioning properly again is with a SMC reset as I said before. I even tried pressing restart and shutdown while my screen was dim but it remained dim.

The lid close/open is sensed via a magnet and a Hall sensor which detects the magnet flux of the magnet.

So if I understand correctly the open is not sensed, but the close is. The sensor is located on the backside of the logic board it’s mounted on a small stand-off as marked here in Red

So compare your logic board to the images in Steps 15 & 16 in this guide MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys Late 2016 분해도 which is the same.

So do you see any visible damage along the boards edge both sides as I’ve seen a deep tool insertion damages things.

Im a little wary to take it apart as I never had before. Please see my modification and let me know if that changes anything before I go dissecting my laptop. Thanks for the help.

@aaronlakers23 - I guess I should have explained a bit more, the sensor doesn’t stop the LCD from getting its signal, only suspend the backlight.

I can full understand not wanting to mess with the system without having the tools and not really something in your wheelhouse of skills.

So… what to do?? I fear the shop did you in as such they should pay for the repair if you can get that from them. So where to go? I’ll tell you Apple directly would be the logical place. I’m sure they will note the damage and quote you the need for a new logic board as they don’t fix them only replace. That would be the most expensive! But more useful to argue in litigation to get your money back.

The logic board is likely repairable which would be the cheaper but without a better idea on what got damaged its hard to say for sure.

So then that aims us to a specialty shop which repairs logic boards (has the tools and micro-soldering skills) depending on where you live and/or can get to is the next best option. That would be the cheaper option but may be questioned in litigation as being unbiased.

Makes sense. My short term solution is to put some felt stoppers on my laptop so it never fully closes and just shut it down or put it to sleep myself. Nice little workaround I guess. I’ll look into some repair shops but don’t feel like spending more money. Thank you Dan, that was extremely helpful.
