My iMac is just cycling restart without getting to the desktop. I have a Bluetooth keyboard but I don't think its working because the machine never finishes the boot process.
Do I need a wired keyboard to get it to safe mode in order to correct this?

If the Bluetooth keyboard isn't connected by the stage in the boot process the computer gets to, then, yes, you will need a wired keyboard. You can, however, use a Windows keyboard if you happen to have one laying around. Apple hasn't made wired keyboards for a while, so that may be your best bet. Just substitute the command key for the windows key. If I were you, I wouldn't boot into safe mode though. I'd boot into recovery mode, the keyboard shortcut for that is Command-R on startup, or, with your Windows keyboard, Windows-R. Then, once you get to the menu, choose "reinstall macOS".
