Butterfly keys doubling, recall expired

I have a 2018 MacBook Air that has one of those bad butterfly keyboards. The keys constantly double whenever I am typing on it. We took it to the Apple Store for the recall program, but the program expired for this machine a year ago. The guy said he could pull off the keycaps, clean underneath, and put new keycaps on top for free, but to truly fix the problem, we would have to rreplace (see what I mean about the keys?) the whole upper case. We did go ahead with the repair (the price was right :) but now some of the keys are showing the same problem again. I looked at how much an upper case costs here on iFixit, and it is a little too much forr (again, lousy keyboard) an older machine. I'm wondering if I can do the same thing Apple did (which at least temporarily corrected the problem), without buying new keycaps or risking damaging anything. Thank you!
