What type of external hard drive is it? SATA or ATA

I have a Western Digital My Passport Wireless 2TB USB 3.0 Wireless Wi-Fi Mobile Storage Device. WDBDAF0020BBK-NESN. The battery has surpassed its lifespan and needs to be replaced. I would like to know the form factor of the hard drive if it is 2.5" or 3.5", SATA or ATA or IDE so I can buy an external hard drive enclosure. Thanks.

The spinning platter HD drives use 2.5” drives. But! The controller board is also the external interface and offers the header on some models to support an internal Lithium Ion battery. So it’s not SATA it’s just a raw drive with a custom controller board. The very first aluminum models where standard SATA HD’s. The Plastic shelled ones are what most people have.

So while it would be nice to slide the drive into a different case you just can’t!

I would suggest you look, at just replacing the battery as being the easier way around this.

The newer SSD models are also simular to the platter drives but don’t have a separate interface board per-say, it’s a daughter board hardwired into the main board.

For reference here’s what a WD My Book looks like inside

This drive doesn’t offer a SATA interface, as you can see the daughter board is the only I/O externally.

@eagwol - I guess you’ll need to open it up to find out what the setup is in your case. It’s either a custom logic board or a standard 2.5” SATA drive.
