Earpiece flex causing boot loop then recovery mode error 4013

Hello,

My son’s iPhone XS was boot looping when he awoke one morning and went to use it. Eventually it went into recovery mode. He tried restoring it via iTunes and got error code 4013.

Following a search on google which kept highlighting the earpiece flex on the XS causing error 4013, I tried disconnecting it and the phone then booted normally and I was able to do a full backup of it.

In one Google post, a person with this error caused by the earpiece flex had accidentally torn off the ambient light sensor while trying to remove the flex from the screen and then tried reconnecting the flex to the logic board despite there no longer being an ambient light sensor attached. The phone booted normally, indicating the ambient light sensor was the cause of the trouble.

There are Chinese devices available to buy which can program a serial number into a replacement ambient light sensor to restore trutone functionality. However, they need the original serial from the ALS and show it being read using 3utools. This isn’t possible if the phone won’t boot with the earpiece flex connected.

Has anyone had this 4013 error caused by the earpiece flex and discovered the definitive cause? Has anyone found a solution to requiring the ALS serial but being unable to boot the phone to get it via a USB cable and software like 3utools?

Any help or advice gratefully received. Thank you.

you can transfer the sensors to a different flex

Yes, or simply take the required sensor from a replacement flex and put on your flex, but if it is a sensor that is paired to your phone, you are back to needing it to be reprogrammed.

In the case of the ambient light sensor, if it isn’t reprogrammed then True Tone will no longer work. The AY A108 programmer can be used with inline connectors to achieve this.

Resolved.

There was slight corrosion visible on the edge of the Face ID flood illuminator which is adjacent to the ambient light sensor on the earpiece flex.

I removed and cleaned the flood illuminator module, then soldered it back on to the flex.

I also removed, cleaned and re-soldered the ambient light sensor.

The phone no longer boot loops, and Face ID works perfectly too, so the flood illuminator module survived.

I strongly recommend buying a solder paste stencil for the flood illuminator and light sensor. I bought a suitable one from eBay for £7 with next day delivery. It is hard to get even solder quantities on the pads otherwise, which meant my first try left the phone with no auto-brightness. One solder pad on the ambient light sensor hadn’t adhered due to a slight lack of solder.
