My iMac turns on to either beeping, a white screen or both.

Hi, I was given an iMac 24” 2007 A1225, which I’m told functioned fine until something happened with the hard drive not being found or something.

I acquired a different hard drive, a 1TB, but upon testing it I get the same problem, a repeating three long beeps sequence and nothing more.

I tried checking the RAM and if I remove one, the left one, the screen comes on, but then I get the beeping again. If I put the right card in the left slot I get a white screen, with no beeping, but nothing else until after a while, when a file icon with ‘?’ inside it appears. If I swap both cards then I get both beeping and white screen again. I obviously have opened it to swap the hard drive.

I didn’t see anything visually wrong, now I’m wondering if I shouldn’t try the old HD with cards swapped. The newer HD was in a different iMac so it shouldn’t be the problem but, idk, I got it from someone else in my building, so I don’t know for sure.

If you can tell me what is the problem without me needing to open it again to swap back the HDs, that would be wonderful as I’m a little shaky handed and want to reduce the possibility of causing harm. Thanks.

Sorry to say you likely have two issues here. The first is the blinking question mark is simply the drives OS is not present or not correct for your system. This series doesn’t offer any OS recovery as such you need the original OS installer CDs or a bootable external drive with the correct OS that you can connect to your system either USB (2.0) or FireWire.

Referring to EveryMac 24” iMac 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo We can see what OS this system requires:

This system can run the last version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion", OS X 10.9 "Mavericks", OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" and OS X 10.11 "El Capitan"-- if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM

OK, let’s now tackle the drive issues. This system SATA interface is older that what is available today. It is only a SATA II (3 Gb/s) as such the drive needs to run at this lower speed. Unless the drive is listed in the spec sheet don’t use it! As an example Samsung 850EVO SSD note this drive lists it on the Interface line.

The last is the RAM, as you can see in the systems specs the version of the OS also has a bearing on the system ability to access 2GB of RAM. So that is likely your issue here. For now just leave the one SO-DIMM in the slot that gives you the Question Mark as that’s the first addressed slot. I’m suspecting this is a 2GB system (2 x 1.0GB SO-DIMMs)

So you’ll need to find a friend with a older Mac to help you create the needed boot drive which holds the needed OS installer. You also need to check the drives specs and maybe find the correct drive. It might be the original replaced drive? Was not the correct drive for this system, so check it as well.
