Airpod only connects when the lid is open

Airpod will only connect to my iphone when the lid is open, and will otherwise disconnect when I close the lid or take the airpod out.

I only have the left airpod but this only happend now out of a couple months of using only one airpod.

Sounds like it's taking power from the holder and not the airpod battery. Battery is probably totally past its service life. Nightmare to replace and would probably damage the pod beyond repair. New set required unfortunately.
