Why is my Integrated SSD not showing up in recovery mode?

I installed a new logic board on my 2017 Macbook Pro (A1707) in January and everything was working great, but all of a sudden it stopped. I've been trying to figure out what the issue is but my Disk isn't even showing up in Recovery Mode. If I open Disk Utility, all I see is the Apple Disk Image and nothing else.

If I go to terminal and run "diskutil list" I get 16 different disks that all take up less than a gigabyte of space. I have attached pics for what I see.

Any ideas on what this is and how to resolve it?

Update (10/18/23)

So I did run Apple Diagnostic and got an error code of VDH002. Looking at the Apple website, it corresponds to "There may be an issue with a storage device."

Is my SSD completely gone or do you think it would still be possible to recover the data?

@danj

I really appreciated your help with my laptop from a previous thread. Any insight to this issue?

When you are booted into recovery mode it is normal for there to be many small images mounted as individual disks and the number can very depending on the macOS version it is based on. From you last picture of the verbose boot it would look like the internal drive directories are not accessible which could indicate a possible SSD failure. I would recommend running Apple diagnostics on it. Make sure the laptop is plugged into its charger first and the system is shut down. Start the system while holding down the Option + D keys to start the online diagnostics utility. If there is a hardware failure with the SSD it should show up in the diagnostics results.

You need to boot up under an external drive to see if you can recover the internal drive.

What you are showing here is the virtual OS installer drive which is within your systems RAM not the SSD drive proper.

Also make sure you are using the correct macOS as Apple altered it’s OS so using too old a version won’t let you see the drive as it doesn’t know how to.

Thanks for the insight! I'll create a bootable USB to run off of. Any idea on what OS to use for the bootable drive? I believe it came with MacOS High Sierra.

@sidvdexx - I would use what the system was running, I would at least get to Mojave.

Sadly the error VDH002 is not good news as the implies the flash chips (SSD) have an issue.

Using the external drive to boot up from are you able to reformat the drive using Disk Utility?

I ordered a new external SSD to install macOS Ventura onto that I'll get tomorrow. Tried using a 128gb Flash drive but that was expectedly a fail. I'll use the drive as a Time Machine backup after.

I replaced the logic board earlier this year and it had High Sierra on it. I upgraded somewhat recently to Ventura but not sure if that's when the issues started. But even if that caused issues on my SSD, the drive would still show up, right? That shouldn't cause the drive to fail to the point of not even showing up in disk utility.

If I am unable to recover the data from the integrated SSD using the external drive, is all hope lost?

@sidvdexx - The 128GB thumb drive is a workable size, but you may have not correctly setup the OS on it. You need to format the drive from another Mac and copy over to it the OS installer file which you need to alter to make it bootable.

Sadly, SSDs can just wink out. The amount od data churn more so when the drive is more loaded up. My rule of thumb is a boot drive should never be more than 2/3rds full. That way there is enough free space for wear leveling.

So the OS version is not the issue, it just could be the act of upgrading pushed the drive too far.

So I was able to get a SSD and install macOS Ventura (13.6) on it, but I can't find my drive through Disk Utility. Is there any way you recommend looking for it? I am going to try target disk mode again and hope I can get that to work
