No charging percentage and repeating reboots after USB replacement

Hi,

after replacing the USB C port of my 11" 2nd gen. iPad Pro my iPad doesn't show the battery charging percentage anymore and reboots permanently (kernel panic*). I suspect I might have damaged a pin of my battery connector when inserting the cardboard strips? My questions: Is this a possible reason for my issue? Are there other possible reasons I could check? If the connector is damaged - is there any other chance for a fix except replacing my battery?

Unfortunately, I think you've hit the nail on the head with your diagnosis. Your panic log is clearly showing temperature sensors located on the battery as being the reason for the reboot; here's the smoking gun.

Missing sensor(s): TG0B TG1B \n

The processor is trying to query the sensors on the battery and can't seem to talk to them, hence the reboot. And that same reasoning applies to the battery charge percentage, which is also contained within the battery.

So yes, it does look like your battery connector got damaged. Unfortunately I'm not that much of an expert on iPads, so I can't tell you what the prospects are for repair. I would say the next step should probably be to pull the motherboard so you can check the connector on both sides, the motherboard and the battery's flex cable.

If it's the battery's flex connector then you can fix the issue by replacing the battery. If the motherboard connector is the one that's damaged then it's a lot harder to fix; you'll need to find someone who can replace that connector using a hot air station. To be honest, that same repair might be possible on the battery flex connector too, but again that's something you'd have to have done by a shop whereas the battery replacement is something you can do yourself.

Update (12/07/23)

Just as an update to clear up any confusion, after seeing Alisha's picture, it's obvious the battery itself does not have a connector; rather it just has bare pads on a circuit board that the motherboard pins contact, so any comments I made about a connector on the battery are null and void.

This is super common on iPads and a bent pin on the battery connector after repair is about as text book as it gets.

There is a pin on the connector that is responsible for battery data (like how charged the battery is). So if that pin is not connecting to the board, the iPad has no clue how much battery life is left. And there is a sensor that it stops hearing from, which causes these reboots.

It’s a poor design for a connector in my opinion and it happens across generations because they still use that same basic connector.

The solo pin the spudger here is pointing to is usually the problem pin.

You may be able to bend it back. There’s a super picture in most of the guides here featuring the problem spot. I would take the board out and have a look. If there is further damage, the connector can also be replaced, but you’ll need some soldering knowhow to tackle that.

I have removed the controller board from my iPad today. Two of the tiny connector pins were actually torn off. As I don't have a spare part for the connector, I soldered on two thin cables as a direct connection to the battery and reassembled the iPad. It's not a pretty solution - but it works (and you can't see it from the outside anyway). Thanks again for your help.

@ddy3katqqfiowje Hey, if it works it works. You found a fix that was within your available parts, equipment and expertise that works for you, so as far as I'm concerned no matter how ugly it might be, it's a successful repair.
