I replaced one of the joysticks in one of my controllers and need help

So I replaced the thumbstick in my right controller last night successfully and it works, only problem is, it won’t track my thumb when I place it on my thumbstick, I managed to figure out this problem before when doing the same to my left controller, but now can’t seem to remember how to do it, can anyone help me here?
