No touch screen after replacing old cracked one

I have replaced the screen of the iPad Air 4 with a screen bought from fixit. Everything powers on and lights up, but no response from touch to the screen.

Any help welcome.

Hi Denny,

We'll start with the assumption that you didn't get a defective screen, which is always a possibility; if that turns out to be the case, iFixit has an excellent customer service group and is happy to help, but lets not assume that right away.

From what I've seen, generally those types of problems are caused by not getting the digitizer plugged back in fully to the motherboard. Those connectors can be finicky and sometimes a little tricky to get back in just right. So what you'll have to do is open it back up and follow the guide to where you can unplug the digitizer.

Get out your magnifying glass and a bright light. You're going to want to carefully go over the digitizer's flex cable looking for any signs of tears or damage, then check the connector itself, both on the cable and the motherboard, for any signs of bent or broken pins. Bent pins can sometimes be straightened with some fine tip tweezers.

Assuming it all looks good, clean both sides with 90% or higher isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Let it dry for a moment then plug it back together and retest.

If it still doesn't work, you may need to plug in the old screen to verify that the touch screen on that still works; if so, that would point to a problem with the replacement screen.

Give that a try and let us know what you find and we can go from there.

Thank you for taking the time to offer such a detailed response.

I did reattach the old screen and although I could no longer see what was going on, the touch element worked as it locked the iPad for a short time. When I went back and looked at the connector on the new screen, I saw that the ribbon was actually torn in a "V". I can't see how I would have damaged it as I was extremely careful, but I also can't believe the replacement screen came in this condition.

I will speak with customer service, but I suspect that this is going to be one of the quickest £150 I have ever spent as they will unlikely replace the screen.

@dennysmith Well crap, mystery solved, but not how you'd hope. Here's wishing you good luck with getting it going again. As far as I know, best way to contact them is via support@ifixit.com.

I have just purchased a new one as there will be next to no chance of the original replacement being covered by any refund/guarantee. I did email support on the off chance.

Really appreciate you taking the time to check back in.
