friend may have dropped phone top of phone plastic cracked around sim card holder and part of top of sim card holder at the eject hole. I tunes and phone try's to activate the phone but no sim car error in i tunes and phone just ask's to try again. I don't have service i just want to reload the phone with software so I can use wifi

Sim card is not pushing on the sim detect switch at the back of the sim card tray.
Temp solution remove sim tray edge and insert sim tray.

I had the same problem and tried several times with different sim cards. Still didn't manage to get it started. Is there anything else to do?

Did you check to make sure that the sim card readers pins are still making contacts and did you clean them? Did you check the sim card detect switch at the back of the sim card slot? you might also want to check on here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdE6zGTsF...
