Blinking green light, DVD drive does nothing

I took my old 1.0 Xbox out of my attic after it was sitting there for about 7-8 years. I knew it was working completely fine when I put it there. I just tested it and it works and boots to the dashboard, BUT the DVD drive doesn’t work.

The Xbox shows a blinking green light on the front when powering it on, and pressing the Eject button does nothing. It also occasionally turns off my console when pressing the Eject button.

Though, after manually ejecting the DVD drive and pulling it out all the way, the blinking green light turns into a static green light and goes back to blinking once I put it back in. The Xbox itself throws no errors regarding the DVD drive, even though it seems to be dead.

(This is probably not related but the console gives me Error 16 the first time I turn on the console (which it does by itself when plugged in) after being unplugged. It’s fine once I reboot it, though)

Update: Sometimes the light keeps blinking even when opening the DVD drive, and sometimes the light stays static after opening the DVD drive and closing it.

Error 16 is related to the date and time. Your clock capacitor has likely spilled it's guts, very common with all but the 1.6 models. When the clock capacitor spills its guts the electrolytic fluid often if left unchecked eats the traces in the area. Sometimes it's not so bad and sometimes it's a rough repair. It's way past time to recap the whole mother board, possible even the psu.

Also original xbox mother boards can suffer from "trace rot" often found around the edges of the mother board.

If it were me I'd start with all of that first. Weak or bad caps can cause odd issues because they interfere with the voltage consistency, dead caps obviously more so. :) If after clock cap removal (and area repairs if needed), and after a recap of the mobo, the dvd drive still plays funny then the shift the focus to it.

It won't do any good to obsess over fixing the dvd drive while the console is being disintegrated by clock cap electrolytic fluid, and other caps are failing from age.

So basically it's time for a full diagnostic and refurb. Good luck.

I've removed the cap years ago so I know it hasn't leaked.
