Replace SD Reader for USB Slot

Hi everybody,

I've experiencing a problem that everybody who have a Late2009 iMac well know.

I want to put another HDD inside my computer to have one SSD and one HDD but i also want to keep my ODD. And I don't have the third SATA port. If search a lot on the forums but the only solutions I've found are 2HDD/no ODD. On OWC (macsales.com), they are talking about putting a third SSD instead of SD card reader. But nobody's talking about...

The SD card reader seems to be an USB device. So I wondering if it is possible to plug the ODD via a SATA2USB converter to the SD plug or something like that.

Does someone have already tried this kind of stuff?

Do you think it is possible to convert by a simple homemade cable the SD card Reader connector to a more common connector like USB or something else?

I've take the SD reader out the Mac and I can see 6 pin on the connector (I know USB is 4)

You can use an external ODD, (you could even put the one you have into a case) you can add USB ports with a self-powered hub. Work smarter, not harder.

I am in the same boat WN3... i actually went so far as to order all the parts (the kit and drive) before recognizing that I had the 11,1 model, which doesn't have a third SATA port. Very frustrating.

Machead3, that is a good thought... I just might go that route. Outside of ripping my music catalog (which only needs to happen once) that drive never gets used.

Another option, not for the feint of heart, is to solder another SATA connector on the board. My question to the community is, does the main board have the required controllers and they just didn't include the connector, or was it just future planning that they left the space. On my quick review of the board (seen through frustrated eyes after recognizing my mistake) it looked like the pads and traces were there for the 3rd connector... making me think it was so crazy it just might work.

I found the part on Digikey, WM19104-ND, I would use. This assumes it was a surface pad setup and not through hole, which I THINK it was.

Has anyone gone down this road? It definitely doesn't qualify for 'Work smarter, not harder' but it would be an epic win if it worked. :)

Cheers
