The first problem was the battery drained and the car wouldn't start. The second is I changed the battery in the smartkey and all communication stopped. The green key on the cluster flashes and welcom driver no longer appears. When we try to rematch the key the message we get says no communication with ecu

Sounds like you changed the battery in the FOB because it wasn't working. Now, with a new battery, it still isn't working.
Then you tried to repair the FOB, which you shouldn't have needed to do anyway, so it looks like the problem is in the ECU. I assume you don't have another FOB to try.
