Here's how to install the RAM and hard drive: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/iMac_...

I'll need to know your current RAM configuration to be able to tell you how much RAM you'll need for 10.4. I would also replace the 3.6 volt PRAM battery while I was in there.

Make sure you have the ide type drive not a SATA. This machine will only see the first 128 GIGs of the drive because of 48 bit addressing, without third party software, which I will try to find for you. The drive should be set to Master on the jumpers.

To load 10.4, insert your installation disk in the CD drive and hit the start button. Push the CD all the way in and hold down the "C" key. The machine should now boot from the installation disk. On the third screen a pull down menu will appear at the top of the screen. Go to utilities and pull down to Disk Utility. You'll se a icon of the new hard drive on the left. Click on it and go to partition and set it to one partition. This should also format as Mac os extended. Now go back and finish the installation. Restart from the internal hard drive and go under the Apple to Software Updates and install the updates, Here are the requirements for 10.4:

To use Mac OS X v10.4, your Macintosh needs:

* A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor

* Built-in FireWire

* At least 256 MB of RAM

* DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation

* At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools
