How to fully discharge a faulty/old battery?

Hi! I ordered an iFixIt battery replacement kit for my macbook. The battery is old (I have the service battery warning) and doesn't hold charge very well. The iFixIt instructions said I should fully discharge the battery before going through with the replacement process. But my battery is sometimes at 90% and it just turns off as if it was out of charge. Sometimes I can discharge until 60% until it shuts off. But I'm worried about this extra charge being dangerous. Can someone please advise me on how to fully discharge my battery so I can safely proceed with the battery replacement? Thank you!

Update (05/24/24)

Sorry that I didn't specify: it's a Macbook Pro 2015 Retina 15".

@vaimsarv - What is your exact MacBook model as there are a few different models which require different means.

This series doesn’t require any discharge procedure before hand, the MacBook series was unique in that regard.

Just follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 배터리 교체

Once you disconnect the battery there is no risks to you but micro electronics is sensitive to ESD (high voltage static discharge) which it’s wise to use an antistatic mat which is grounded.

As to the old battery, just dispose of the battery safely recycle it. While not ideal to have the battery charged it doesn’t pose a risk as long as you don’t create a short within it.

If you open up your MacBook, you will find the battery next to the motherboard. If you look along the boundary between the two, you will probably find a big square piece of plastic with wires going out of it, to the battery. This will be on the motherboard. Pry up the plug, so that it is disconnected. Then, partially turn your Mac over and try to power it on. This will drain any charge left in the motherboard's capacitors. Your motherboard is now drained of any residual charge and has no power to it.

Of course, this is a most-mac case, as you did not provide any detail. For a more precise answer, could you turn over the Mac and look near the vent at the top of the back case. There is some small text there. Read it and tell us what the model is.

@vaimsarv simply follow the steps I told you and you will have no issue. I have a very similar model and that is all you need to do. Disconnect the battery before you start working.
