WiFi adaptor based issue

I have done the setup for WiFi adaptor in my kali linux machine but and turn it to the monitor mode but when i type the airodump-ng wlan0 or airodump-ng wlan0mon the don't dispaly any BSSID near me ?

Does the output of "airmon-ng" change when you have the adapter plugged in vs. when it isn't plugged in? From my recollection Wi-Fi adapters are under a different name from wlan0.
