Turning on computer with installation disk in external DVD player shows there is no hd. Gives info about the computer but have no option to install on the computer. Do I need a new hard drive and DVD player or will it work once I pu† a new hard drive in?

When booted from the external CD, did it see the internal DVD drive in the "About this Mac"?

By "About this Mac", do you mean in System Profiler? I don't think that the About window really shows much information.
Disk Utility does not show the hard drive. I haven't taken the hard drive out so there shouldn't be a change in the seating...right? I can't get anything from 'About this Mac' because I'm looking at everything through my installation disk but when I go to System Profiler under disc burning it says 'no burning device found'.
did they both stop working at the same time?
By the way, if this is a PowerBook, are the harddrive and optical drive on the same ATA bus? Could it be that the ATA internal section on the board has died?

If it is not detecting a harddrive, it won't install. Does Disk Utility show the harddrive? If it doesn't, you may need a a new harddrive. You could also check to see if the drive is fully seated in place.

josh - there is a "more info" tab in about this mac that gives you the hardware information
That's what I meant by System Profiler, as that's what the More Info brings up.
Yes, they both quit working at the same time. My computer first froze and when I restarted it there was the question mark. I put the Leopard installer disk into the optical drive (because I couldn't find my original PowerBook installer disk). It looked like I was able to reinstall everything and even connected it to my iMac to install all my applications, internet info, etc. When I restarted it everything was there. The software update said I needed to update some of my software so I did and when I restarted it the question mark was back and I couldn't get my disk out. I hooked up a DVD player to the firewire and put the original PowerBook installation disk in (which I finally found) but when I started it with the C key and went to repair my hard drive it didn't show up in the disk utility. A computer place (that doesn't know too much about Macs) was able to get the disk out but didn't know what else to do. Thanks for any help you can give me!!
I believe your problems are beyond what we can do over the internet. My next step would be to run professional disk tools to validate your hard drive. There is a possible ID conflict between your hard rive and the Optical drive. I would need to see which is master and slave. You can try putting it in target mode by connecting between your PowerBook and your iMac via a firewire cable. Start the book up and hold down the "T" key until you get a firewire icon on the screen. Then start your iMac. The PowerBook hard drive should show up on the desktop. The see if the system profiler will see book and it's ATA dive status.
