on the iPhone XS there’s a trim (guessing plastic), that is between the screen and the metal frame, that broke off. That has caused dust to get inside the phone and mess with Face ID and the camera. Anyone who’s experienced fixing this iPhone maybe knows what would it take to fix this?

Hi,
This is a relatively easy fix, but only if you know what you are doing, as it is very easy to ruin your lcd.
You can get a replacement bezel frame cheap (prices vary with suppliers), this is what it looks like:
If you’re not able/confident to replace this then you can decide if you want to try and use a sealant at the missing/broken area (messy), or buy a replacement assembly with bezel already installed and do it yourself, or get repair shop to quote you on fixing the issue.

Replacing that bezel comes with its own risks; I've had a bezel come off on me before and basically I ended up ruining the screen trying to glue it back on, so keep that in mind when contemplating your options. Harry has a good plan there, but the OLED is right below the bezel so in the act of separating it you're at risk of damaging it. I will certainly be a very inexpensive fix if you can pull it off.
The alternative you could also consider is to just go ahead and replace the screen. The price of OLED displays for the X series phones has dropped to dirt cheap levels, so it's definitely worth considering as one of your choices. The only downside is that you'll lose the True Tone function unless you or someone you know has a device programmer to copy the MtSN number from the old screen or the phone into the replacement screen. As an example, looking on AliExpress you can find those screens (very similar to the iPhone X screens I've been buying) for around $14 USD. I used to be ecstatic when I found one for only $35, so you can imagine how I'm thrilled with the current prices. Here's one that works for your phone.

these older screens are so cheap nowadays? I didn’t realise, I thought replacing the screen would be a triple figure fix, which wouldn’t be worth it considering you can get a second hand one for the same price. Do you have any experience with these AliExpress screens? since the last time I’ve seen a cheap repair done (at a shop) the screen started dying (dead pixels, color artifacts and a digitizer with a mind of its own) after the smallest drop
@arnasmasalis I have two grandchildren, each with an iPhone X, and as such I have quite literally lost count of how many screens I have replaced on them. So yes, I have used a lot of those AliExpress screens and in general I have been quite pleased with the ones I've used from them. There were two main issues I had; first, several of them did not come with the green plastic mount for the front sensors and earpiece speaker so that had to be purchased separately and glued on, and secondly the screen's mounting frame did not use a very good quality of glue, resulting in the frame separating from the screen the next time it was removed. Of course, in general the only time I needed to remove the screen was when it was broken, so that wasn't much of an issue for my needs.
But for $14 I felt it was well worth the money even with those issues.
