X button works only when the controller is disassembled

I have a PS4 controller that works fine except for the X button, I opened it then cleaned it, and before reassembling it I put the rubber part that goes above the circuit board and pressed the X button. It worked fine, but when I closed the front shell and tried it it wouldn't work, I then opened it and tried again with only the rubber part, it worked but when I closed it again it didn't work.

what could be the problem?

Hi!

Are you sure it's still making contact? It does sound like this is the issue here. Please be sure that the Button Circuit Membrane is making good contact with the motherboard. Also, check if the rubber is good positioned here.

If all is fine and the contact is good, then replace the Button Circuit Membrane just to be sure and test it again.

I put the controller back together while I was waiting for an answer and at first, the button did not work but when I pressed it really hard it started to work and even normal presses worked fine with a few presses not registering.

Does this mean that the rubber is bad or is it the Circuit Membrane?

I would replace the rubber first in this case! It is making good contact with the motherboard, so that is good! It's just the rubber which is not making good contact at all. Replace that one first and see how it goes! Also please clean the "X" button as well.
