iMac Shutting Down Randomly – Seeking Advice

Hello Everyone,

In mid-2011, I purchased a 27-inch iMac. Recently, I started using OpenCore Patch to install macOS Sequoia 15.0.1, which worked perfectly for a couple of days. After that, I updated to version 15.0.2 using OpenCore Patch again. During this time, I also installed and tested the Setapp application. Although I’m not sure if it’s related, a few hours after installing Setapp, my iMac began shutting down unexpectedly.

When the iMac shuts down, it attempts to restart, but the screen remains blank. To troubleshoot, I reverted to macOS High Sierra, but the issue persists: the iMac shuts down within 2–3 minutes of operation. After shutting down, I have to wait at least 20–25 minutes before it can power back on.

I carefully opened the iMac and checked all connections. The fans appear to be working correctly. Currently, I suspect the power supply might be the problem, as the system seems to require cooling time before restarting.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions to help me resolve this issue.

Thank you all in advance!

This will take a bit of work to ID the root cause. The first and easiest is just run the diagnostics to see if it even works as Apple did mess it up in one of their OS updates and never fixed it. Mac startup key combinations If that’s the case we’ll need a different approach using a paid App which is not very expensive TG Pro the paid version offers some useful diagnostics and even the free trial version offers helpful data on your systems temps.

See if you can keep the system running longer placing it within the coolest place in your home. Review the temps to see if something looks a bit hot just before the system stops as well as any errors show up in the diagnostic service. Post here a snapshot of the Apps main window so we can see things as well just before the system fails (as close as you can get). Lastly review the Crash Reports under Terminal, again take a snapshot of the last few times. I would save the output to a file and then clean the buffer so you don’t get lost in older reports.

Let’s see what it tells us.

While the power cable is plugged in, the fans are running even though there is no display on the screen, and pressing the power button doesn’t change anything. I have now unplugged the power cable and plan to wait about half an hour. After that, if it turns on and stays on long enough, I will try to gather the data you requested.

If the iMac shuts down again before I can collect this data, what would you suggest I do next?

@goekhanseymen - TG Pro offers a logging function so you might find it was captured within it before it winked out.just do the best you can. I just hate to play a game of WackaMole needlessly if I can get something that leads me to a direction. Best of luck!
