Xbox v1.6 PSU odd behaviour.

I am currently working on an Xbox v1.6 with a 240V Delta PSU. The unit wouldn't power on, when I opened it up the usual 3300uf 6.3V caps were bulging and leaking, luckily nothing had gotten onto the board yet. I tested the PSU and it gave steady 5v reading on all orange wires while plugged into the board.

After changing the leaking caps for new ones and connecting everything back up it didn't turn on. The weird thing is that now when the PSU is plugged into the mobo it gives no readings however when it is unplugged from the board it gives all the correct readings.

I haven't done anything to the PSU and have no idea why it would be behaving this way, when I know it was definitely giving correct readings while connected to the board before changing the caps.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions that could potentially lead to a solution here? Any help is appreciated

Cheers

Levi

Hi Levi!

Yes, those 3300uf 6.3V caps are known to fail.

Good thing you replaced those!

How is the Clock capacitor? Still OK? You could replace this one as well and clean the whole board.

Anyway, the PSU is likely to fail (soldering is getting bad near the power plug), please check those solder joints.

Otherwise you need to replace the PSU for a new one and see how that goes. But, before doing this, are you sure that there are no solder splashes on the motherboard? It could cause a short and thus prevent the console from turning on. Please check this as well. If it's all fine and if there are no shorts, try a new PSU and see how that goes.

If you have any more questions, please let us know!

Cheers for the reply,

Ill have a look over the board for any splashes and see if anything stands out 👍 The clock cap is in good condition, no bulging or leaking at all. I'm hoping to not need to replace the PSU however will see how this repair goes.

Thanks again mate.

My pleasure! Yes, that is the best thing to do 😃! Alright, as long as it is good, it’s fine. Hopefully the repair will be good! Please let us know how it goes!

No solder splashes happily.

I did some checking on one of my working xbox's and it does the same thing, no reading until I turn it on. After some digging it looks like there is a transistor known to cause the V1.6 to not power on, I have ordered replacement parts and am waiting for them to arrive. I'll let you know how it goes 👍

Alright, that is good! Ah, you mean a transistor on the PSU it self? If yes, can you share with us which one it is? Hopefully you will get it fixed asap :)! Thanks!!

It lives 😎 I got the green flubber to fire up. After replacing the leaking caps I replaced the transistor shown in the linked video and it fired right up. Thanks for all the help 👍
