Adhesive for the battery and main board

TL;DR; I want adhesive to re-glue the logic board and the battery so they stay put. However, I also want the glue to be able to be removed easily.

In the case of adhesive for the main board, high thermal conductivity would be a nice bonus.

I have removed the adhesive that come with the battery, I think it's too strong for safe removal.

I have managed to disassemble my iPad, non-destructively remove the battery (or at least, not that it matters, I have a new one in there). However, I have also removed the main board, and everything else.

A lot of component is held in place by glue. iFixit's batteries come with glue strips, but I removed them because I fear that removing it, should I ever need to, is going to be impossible, and I dont want to go through the traumatic experience of dowsing the entire inside with a quart of isopropyl alcohol and prying gently.

This also include the main board. It's not "glued", but the metal foam connecting those two are permanently destroyed upon the lifting of the board from the chassis.

Update (03/11/25)

I have 3M command strips, but they are too thick, the ipad probably won't close.

I also have thermal epoxy (or, thermal glue), however those set permanently, which is not useful should I want to service my iPad again.

I have tried Scotch double sided tape, but they are too weak.

I have thought of hot glue, allowing relatively easy methods of removal, however it might soften itself due to heat from device, so it's also nto great.

I am open to adhesive that is soluble. Super glue technically count as one, but it might destroy the battery and damage the board, I don't want to do that.

You could try using Tesa 61395 Tape or 3M Scotch 5952 VHB Tape they also make a flat double sided tape which is thinner than these two foam tapes 3M Double Coated Tape Extended Liner 9925XL but the surfaces need to be very clean and not have any unevenness as the thin tape won’t compress to match the surface imperfections.

I would stay away from epoxy’s or glues as they will make future repairs harder. I use the Command tapes to hold batteries in MacBook systems and haven’t had a problem.

With iPads the battery suppler I use pre-tapes the battery and I just use what they supply.

I have encountered issues when the old glue was not fully removed. And the solvent you use maybe your undoing! I use a Citrus oil based adhesive remover to get the last bits off the case, I then wipe the surface down with reagent grade 90% isopropyl alcohol using a lint free wipe. I go through three wipes repeatedly as the Citrus remover does take a good effort to clean off and the quality of the alcohol can bite you as when it evaporates can leave a film which interferes with the adhesion of the tapes.

I used isopropyl exclusively for removing the adhesive. On second thought, its not too bringht an idea. But it keeps the insides clean.

This is why I am looking for a non-traditional adhesive. Either heat-removed, or some other solvent removeable.

But yes, Tesa tape is good tape.

Command strips are too thick for the iPad. It might be enough for the macbook, but not for iPad.

@cdr_xavier - Well it you only used simple 60~80% IPA that could explain things!

Do this clean a shot glass so it’s perfectly clean, now pour in half way, cover the top with some porous tissue paper held in place with a rubber band trimming away a bit so there is not any hanging to low. I used a coffee mug warmer to heat the glass (low heat) to force the alcohol to evaporate. I bet you you’ll see a film on the bottom.

A reagent grade IPA 90% is what you want. But that alone won’t clean off the adhesive that’s still stuck which is why you need the Citrus Oil cleaner like Goo-Gone as that cuts through the adhesive! But then you need to clean off the Citrus Oil cleaner as I described cleaning off with multiple clean wipes dampened with IPA if you can smell the Citrus it’s likely not clean enough.
