Black Screen on MacBook, but display on external Monitor

Whenever I boot up my Macbook, it just shows a blank screen. On the external monitor I have it plugged into, it has display. Is there any fix?

Update (03/17/25)

@danj I think it might be the attena cables. Look at the video i’m going to show you

It seems like it’s flickering on the display

FYI. I somehow got it working by opening it halfway, then turning it on, then opening it fully.

@cipherh - Which display are we looking at here? The internal or external?

This sounds like a backlight ribbon cable issue this series encountered. The fact opening the display part way to get it to work is a common symptom. Here’s a deeper write up FlexGate here the common line is damaged not one of the three strings lines which gets you the stage light effect.

Sorry, that’s the internal. But if what the article says. Then am I screwed here?

@cipherh - If moving the angle of the lid causes the screen to wink on/off proves it. Sorry for the bad news, you might find a used display that’s cheaper.

If your set, don’t forget to score the answer and accept the answer, thanks!

Well…if the external is working correctly then the internal display has the issue either within the lid or the TCON board which is held in the upper case area or the ribbon cables between the two.

Review this guide MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 Screen Replacement on what’s required to get to the area in question. Carefully inspect of wear on the ribbon cables as well as damage with the Chin plate area just below the screen as the chin plate glass could have punctured the ribbon cables.

As you can see a replacement display assembly is not cheap!

Here is a good video explaining the flexgate issue and a way to repair it without having to buy a complete new display. Good Luck!

If the curl area is the point of damage, putting on jumpers can work for a short time but as we can’t put on too thick a wire these thinner wires don’t hold up well.

Splicing a new tail onto the ribbon cable also tends making the splice point thicker and as there is a limited space where the cable curls in and out it can fail too.

I would prefer the full ribbon cable replacement as being the best repair and ever so slightly longer one so there is less stress. The rub here is this is not an easy display assembly to take apart. You do need access to the ribbon cable and good soldering skills as soldering on the very small pads without damaging the connection is tricky!

A common area is also the chin plate area just under the visible screen. This area covers the ribbons so any damage to the plate which is glass can cut into the cables just behind it. I’ve had good success in patching this damage as well as replacing the chin plate. The cause, using a snap-on shell cover or getting something stuck between.
